Sony needs little introduction when it comes consumer electronics. Walkman, Trinitron, and PlayStation are some of the brand names widely recognized throughout the World. Sony is no stranger to creating a standard formats like 3.5 inch floppy disc and Compact Disc formats.

On the wrong side of the Betamax/VHS format war, Sony came out on the right side of the HDDVD/Blu-ray format war. Sony spearheaded the Blu-ray format over the rival HDDVD format introduced by Toshiba. Being the creator of the Blu-ray technology, it’s no surprise that Sony makes some of the most popular and sought after Blu-ray players.

Buoyed by the success of PlayStation and PlayStation 2, Sony created PlayStation 3. In a bid to create a dominant format to replace the DVD, Sony implemented Blu-ray into the PlayStation 3. This helped Sony to establish Blu-ray as the dominant High-Definition format.
