Product Description

From the Manufacturer
The Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray Disc Player combines high quality images with enhanced networking functions, including VIERA Cast's improved internet functionality that provides access to Amazon Video on Demand's (VOD) huge selection of titles. Continuing its commitment to producing products that stress ease of use, the 2009 line of Blu-ray Disc players continue to incorporate VIERA Link, allowing the consumer to operate their audio/video components, via HDMI, with one remote. And, in keeping with Panasonic’s pledge to reduce the planet’s carbon footprint, the new Blu-ray players have been designed to reduce power consumption.

Experience Movies Like Never Before
The DMP-BD60 employs the PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. Developed in collaboration with Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory, this high image processing technology reproduces clear, vivid colors that are faithful to the original film. Recognizing that audio is important to the overall entertainment experience, this Blu-ray Disc player features a high definition audio decoder (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio Essential) to take advantage of the exceptionally high quality 7.1 channel surround sound now integrated in Blu-ray Discs.

Experience Movies Like Never Before
VIERA CAST technology, introduced in Panasonic’s PZ850 2008 VIERA Plasma, is now available in the DMP-BD60. The internet enabled technology lets the consumer access the internet without the need of either an external box or a PC and enjoy the entertainment value provided by such targeted sites as Amazon VOD, with an extensive library of streamed titles, YouTube, Google’s Picasa Web Album , Bloomberg, and a weather channel. The DMP-BD80 also includes an SD Memory card slot and USB slot, making it easy for the consumer to view and share both digital still images and HD video recorded with an HD camcorder in the AVCHD format.

In order to produce the ultimate picture quality, the Panasonic’s DMP-BD60 Blu-ray players employs high precision 4:4:4 signal technology, which working in tandem with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus processes each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the horizontal direction, to compliment vertical direction processing. P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD) is another technology that contributes to the superior picture quality of the Blu-ray players. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel.

Panasonic’s Blu-ray players further utilize 16-level motion detection to categorize the image motion of each pixel into one of 16 levels; diagonal processing to detect diagonals and correct the pixels accordingly; 1080p up-conversion to up-convert content recorded in the 480i/p or 720p format to 1080p. The Blu-ray players also provide 1080/24p output, thereby reproducing cinema images from a Blu-ray Disc and DVD in their original 24p form with no need for conversion. This allows the user to enjoy cinema images in the same format used in cinema with a 1080/24p compatible TV. Complimenting the HD audio codecs this Blu-ray player features 96kHz surround re-master, a function that enhances the sound quality of CDs and other sources, and even improves the quality of the multi-channel audio data on Blu-ray Discs and DVDs.

ENERGY STAR Rated
In order to obtain a reduction in power consumption the Panasonic DMP-BD60 uses Auto Power Stand-By, a function that automatically turns off the player when you return to TV operation using the VIERA Link menu. In addition, the Stand-by Power Save automatically turns off the player’s Quick Start function. When VIERA is turned on, Quick Start also turns on. In addition, the development of the UniPhier single chip LSI makes it possible to pack an entire video signal processing circuit onto a single chip. This helps lower power consumption, reduces the number of parts needed and allows for a more compact design. In fact, the DMP-BD60 consumes 16% less power in standby mode than last year’s model, the DMP-BD35.

Great player for the price

For the price, I think this is an excellent blu-ray player. It also does very good with DVD up-conversion and makes DVDs look fantastic. The player has worked reliably for me so far and hasn't had any problems with any of the movies I've thrown at it. As with all blu-ray players, it's slow getting ready to play a movie when you first put it in. It's usually takes 30 seconds until you get to the menu screen, but that's the blu-ray standard for you. The player has all the features I need, so I'm quite happy with it overall. On the downside, the case is pretty cheap and flimsy looking. It probably wouldn't hold up well if it was going to be moved around a lot. Mine just sits in the equipment rack behind doors, so it's out of sight and not an issue for me but that might be for you. Despite this, I think it's hard to beat this player considering the low price.
Great value in a bluray player, but dont buy it for BD-Live feature

got it from amazon, hooked it up using HDMI for the video and digital audio out for audio, since I wanted to use a spare digital audio input on my yamaha receiver. was glad I could do this and not have to buy a new receiver just for bluray LOL. I hooked up to my wireless router using 50ft cat5 network cable, since a wireless bridge would cost almost as much as the player did. I then updated the firmware from 1.9 to 2.2. I then installed the SD card (needed only for BD-Live feature) and hooked up the amazonBasics Hdmi & TosLink cables (these cable are also an excellent value).

Picture and sound are great. I have an existing 5.1 setup so didn't know or care about dolby or dts 7.1 trueHD. I like that the viera link feature switches my panasonic tv input to hdmi when I play a disc. However, if I turn on the player before the tv, it goes into some easy setup mode. Not a big bother, though.

bluray discs ( tried harry potter 6) are slower to load than dvds. The BD-Live feature (at least from warner) is slow, clunky and buggy. I was watching some harry potter content via BD-Live and suddenly it stopped and the player went back to the blu-ray background screen. what!? however, there was no freezing when loading or playing bluray discs. In all, a solid value, but dont buy it for the BD-Live feature.

Other things - I hear the successor model, DMP-BD65, has built-in wireless, however it may be more expensive initially. So get this DMP-BD60 before it's gone ...
Great Basic Player

I bought this player in December 2009. It plays Blu Ray discs and DVDs without a problem. Was easy to setup. Overall, this player is perfect for what I need. All I needed was a player to play Blu Ray discs and was not interested in any bells and whistles that other players may offer.
GREAT blu-ray player

I just love this blu-ray player. It syncs with my Panasonic television automatically, so inserting a DVD and playing it is a snap. With other players you must fiddle around with the input and output; with this one you just hit play, and the TV and player act as one. GREAT product
Perfect Player

Reviewer: Rescue 51,
I decided to try out Amazon's Warehouse Deals and purchase the Panasonic DMP-BD60 player at a reduced rate. New was about $129 and one of the units from Warehouse Deals in "Very Good" condition was $107. So after the purchase and receiving it in a slightly frazzled box, it looks and works just like new! You can't even tell the difference if you had a new one next to it. The first thing I did was update the firmware via ethernet connection and popped in a DVD to test it. Worked perfectly with a slight delay on starting the program from disk which is very common. Tried a music CD and also worked perfectly. Very pleased with my Blue-ray player and decision to try out Amazon's Warehouse Deals.

Overall, I am very happy with this player, but I am not happy with the remote control system. I also have a Panasonic DMR-EZ28K recorder, which uses a similar remote control unit and they seem to interfere with each other - to the point where I usually have to control each machine manually. I've tried changing the frequencies but that doesn't help.

The player itself is a little bit slow to start up, but I had read about that in reviews and was prepared for that. Once it's finally ready to play a DVD, it works great. No skipping yet, probably because I updated the firmware via the internet, as recommended.

I've only had this unit a few months, so I can't comment on long term reliability.
Save your money, get a Samsung or Pioneer instead

Right out of the box my player started getting the occasional U73 error. As time went on, the frequency of this error increased to near 100%. According to the manual this is typical of a bad cable and so I did some testing. After trying four different cables all of which work with my PS3, Direct TV receiver and Harman Kardon Amplifier I called Panasonic Technical Support. The phone tech walked me through resetting the unit but the error persisted so he issued an RMA number. After wasting my money to ship it back and holding my player for three weeks, the tech at the service center, Dan, called and said he couldn't duplicate the error and that he was shipping the unit back with a Panasonic cable. I highly doubt he even plugged it in because as soon as it came in I connected it using the Panasonic cable and immediately got the U73 error. I've tried calling Dan multiple times and left several messages with no response. Due to the lack of customer support I have a $180 paper weight and am in the market for a new blu-ray player. Way to ensure I never buy another of your products Pana-Suck-It.
Just what you need in a Blu Ray player

Reviewer: B. Jones,
The picture and especially sound quality are incredible. The remote is intuitive and easy to use. It is also sleek, slim and visually pleasing. The response time is a little slow but that is common for Blu Ray players (new technology). This is an excellent value.

Could not ask more for the price. Have used product for about a month with no problems what so ever. It is a little bit slow to load the disk but other than that is a great player.
Excellent Blu-Ray Player

All the movies I have missed I now look forward to seeing on my big screen in the comfort of my own home. I have nothing to compare it to except my old dvd player and there is no comparison, its so much better. I have also been watching my old dvd's with a new sense of awe. I hooked it up to my old analog surround sound system and its just perfect for me. I totally recommend this blu-ray player and at such a great price.

Reviewer: Gary Webb,
I now have two of these players. That tells you something.
The quality and look of this player are top notch.

The only downside from my perspective, is the response time
from when you push the button to open the door, close
the door or to power off the unit. It is quite slow.
Great Player

It works good likewise the picture quality. It's a shame that it should be connected by wire to the web instead with wireless
