Memorex MVBD-2510 Blu Ray Player Review
January 26, 2009
Memorex isn't synonymous with High definition video. Memorex isn't the brand we identify with high definition product. None the less, Memorex has produced an excellent Blu-ray player on the strength of low price and generally great performance. The player supports 1080p at 24fps as well as on board decoding of high definition audio. It comes with ample amount of connectivity options. Memorex has put together a solid player at a great price point.
The player looks like most other Blu-ray players. Tray is located in the middle with the LCD and playback buttons on right side. The player includes composite video and S-video connector for people without HDMI compliant television. It also comes with HDMI, USB, and 5.1 channel audio connector. The player only supports Profile 1.1 at this time. The lack of ethernet port would suggest it would not be upgraded to BD-LIVE compatible player. However, the USB could be used as an internet connection. I have not heard any news regarding Memorex's plan to upgrade the player to Profile 2.0. The remote control is functional at best. If you own a receiver and a High Definition television, you might want to invest in a quality universal remote.
The most important part of Blu-ray player is the video quality. This player passed all the imaging quality checks. I ran through several blu-ray movies. Both Ghost Rider and Serenity played flawlessly. The audio options are very nice for a budget player. It has on board decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution. It can output the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio if you have receiver capable of decoding these formats. I liked the fact that it came with 5.1 audio channel analog support out of the box. For a player that can be bought as cheap as $130.00, the audio options are fantastic. The minor complaint I have with this player is the load time. It did take little longer than most other players. Other than that, the performance is excellent.
I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of this player. This player stacks up very well with the basic Blu-ray player offered by Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, or any other major brands. And, it does it at a price point of $130.00. With holiday discounts, you might be able to find it even cheaper.

I was very happy with the Memorex MVBD2510 until I got a new movie made after 11/2008. WOW the frustration of trying and trying to update the firmware and customer service is almost non exsistant. Makes me sorry I every boought the machine.
This is another example of a good company that has gone down the tubes.

Memorex Blu-Ray player
This player was a great price, and for the most part would get a good review. But I did have to upgrade the firmware, available on the Memorex website, to watch certain movies.

Works Just Fine
I got this Blu-ray player for x-mas and it works great. I assume that mine shipped with the firmware update already installed.
I have played a dozen or so blu-ray movies & regular DVD’s on it already without any problems at all. One movie skipped and caused me to restart it, but upon further inspection of the disc (regular DVD) it had a pretty deep scratch on it.
This would be a 5 star product except that it is slow to load, and slow to eject. Standing there hunched over, waiting for the tray to open / close is annoying… so I just hit the eject button, walk over the the kitchen, grab a drink, and when I come back the tray is finally open. I can live with that.
*** UPDATE 01-31-2009 ***
As it turns out, I DO need to install the firmware update. Initially all of my BD movies worked fine, but I was proven wrong when I got the new X-Files movie in from Netflix (my mistake). I downloaded the firmware update, burned it to a CD-R as vaguely described in their manual, and loaded the firmware from the player’s settings menu. After several attempts at this, including the system freezing up, several different CD-R burns, and hours of frustration… It STILL does not work. I emailed tech support 3 days ago and have yet to get a reply. Oh, and because this unit is sooooo slow, it really has taken me over 5 hours of waiting and waiting for the player to attempt to load the updates. I will call on monday, and if I don’t get the issue resolved I will find a way to return it.

You get what you pay for
I bought this for around $140 last year without any reviews. This unit does work and play Blu-Ray movies usually without any effort. It takes considerable time powering on, and then even longer to load a movie. If you are impatient, I don’t recommend this player. It will not eject until it is finished loading.
Occasionally, the picture and/or sound will get distorted for a couple of seconds. This is rare, but happens enough so that I am sure it wasn’t a bad disc. I also had to reboot the system several times in order for it to recognize and play The Dark Knight. That was the only movie it has had trouble loading so far.
I have also had trouble locating a universal remote code for this device. Blu-ray is new so that is overlooked, but it would be nice.
If you want a discount blu-ray player and are expecting to get what you pay for, then I say go ahead with this purchase. I personally would have ponied up a few more dollars and bought a higher end model if I had known this one was so slow and finicky.

Great price, lousy product…
My Memorex Blu-Ray had assorted problems:
The DVD tray intermittently jams shut, preventing it from opening or ejecting the disc.
It freezes while randomly while playing Blu-Ray discs. (It ate my Cloverfield Blu-Ray & wouldn’t give it back. It was stuck in there a couple of days until it apparently tired of the taste & gave it back.)
Waiting on RMA from Memorex. Tho I got this unit at a bargain price, I’m expecting to lose on the deal for shipping. Not too impressed with Memorex customer service, either. Might stick a disc of clown porn in the tray before shipping the unit out for repair…
Overall, sorry I didn’t get a Samsung or another Sony…

Decent If On A Budget
Overall this player will let you watch blu-ray movies on a budget but it’s a bit disappointing. Bear in mind that I have no experience with other players and some of my gripes may be present in other systems.
First of all, load time is painful. From power up to play time is a good minute or so. Also, the time it takes to eject a disc can take 30 to 45 seconds. When you power up the unit expect to wait until the drawer opens whether a disc is in it or not.
Second, the remote control functions are routinely “missed” by the player. Those commands that are received have a significant lag time. This makes it really hard to pause a movie at a specific scene.
Lastly, some movies behave differently when using the title menu button. At times it does take you relatively quickly to the movie’s title menu. At other times it may restart the disc (again, which may be painfully slow).
All in all, 3 stars is probably pretty fair considering that blu-ray in general still has quite a lot of kinks to work out. Here’s hoping that online updates will smooth it out.

Very good reasonably priced player
My wife gave me this player for Christmas. I was surprised since she normally doesn’t buy me electronics. I am picky about what I get and research heavily before buying something. When she surprised me with this, my first thought was that now I was going to have to return it, since I wanted a different player that I had been researching. Since it was such a good buy and I wanted to make my wife happy, I decided that I would try it out on some of the blu ray discs I had received. The player had a faster response time than expected and the PQ was great on my Sony LCD. I have kept it and have been very happy.
Apparently firmware updates are a common thing for Blu Ray players. I downloaded the most recent and it was a very easy process.
I am disappointed with the slow processing for even small jpeg photo files. I had hoped to be able to use this player for showing photos in a slide show. It isn’t good enough for that; but it does a fine job for what I need it for, playing Blu Ray discs.

Great Player
It did not want to play Batman & 310 to Yuma. I downloaded the filmware from memorex web site, installed it and it works great. Excellent picture easy to use and good quality.
The only thing I don’t like about it is you have to wait until it looks for a disk before it will open the door.
