Magnavox NB500MG9 Blu-Ray Review
January 26, 2009
Magnavox is known for delivering cheaper electronics alternatives to Sony, Samsung, or other well established manufacturer. Magnavox NB500MG9 is priced around $200.00. This is fairly cheap for stand alone Blu-ray disc player. The player debuted at the price point of $300.00 but can be had for $200.00 as of this writting. Since it is not the latest model, it does miss some key features that might be important for high definition home theater buyers.
The player has fairly standard design. It has the loading tray on the left. The LCD is in the middle with basic playback function on the right. The remote control is fairly standard as well. It's not cluttered and important buttons are color coded. The player only supports Profile 1.1. Also, it does not have ethernet connection which means it wont be upgradable to profile 2.0. The back of the player includes the connections for component video, composite video, digital coaxial output, analog stereo output, and the HDMI.
The video output is pretty good. It can output 1080p in 24fps which is very nice feature for player priced around $200.00. The video output quality between different players are pretty close from different manufacturers. The very early players had some wide disparity in output quality but the newer models have similar performance when it comes to audio and video. I only played two movies for testing. The Ghost Rider and Batman Begins. Both played without any noticeable flaws. The audio quality was fairly good. The lack of 5.1 or 7.1 channel connection might be problem for people without a receiver. It also lacks any onboard decoding for the high definition audio formats. However, the high definition audio can be bitstreamed to receiver capable of decoding these audios.
The real attraction for this player is the price point. The $200.00 is fairly good for Blu-ray disc player. You might be able to find a better player at this price on sale through holiday season. Even so, it's a competent player if you are not looking for onboard decoding of high definition audio or Profile 2.0 player.

I purchased the product on Black Friday and it worked well for exactly 88 days at which time it no longer played Blu-Ray discs. The old adage that you “get what you pay for” is applicable. Save tour money for a better unit

Some Wal-Marts still have this player in inventory BUT have placed it in their stockrooms. Most have removed the tags. The one in NewBerry, SC found out they had 5 of them, selling NOW for 168.00. After going thru similar repair issues and incredulously POOR customer service with another product (A very espensive HP laptop), I decided against this unit. If you want the BEST in BluRay, buy a Sony Playstation 3. if you want the nmxt best, get a Sharp Aquous. The latest Phillips 8000 series is decent but just about everything else WILL break on you. The only thing I like in Phillips personally is their cheapest regular DVD which still plays DIVX encoded disks.
PlayStation 3 will cost you 400 bux still BUT it will do so much more than just play B-ray great.

HDMI port went out after about 4 months called customer support because of “1 year warranty” was told that it would cost me $100 dollars to have them look at it plus the cost of shipping. They also said it would take anywhere from 6-8+weeks. This was after the 5th call to customer service. Each time never got the same answer. Decent player for the few months I had it but would suggest avoiding it at all costs.

AVOID Maganavox and Funai
We purchased this item for about $130 on a black friday sale in Nov. 28, 2008. It worked great until 8:15 P.M. on March 29, 2009. It stopped playing Blu-Rays. After e-mailing Funai, I received a reply with a customer service number. I called that number and they referred me to a local repair center. I was advised by this authorized repair center I would have to pay a MINIMUM of $45, just to have them look at. (REALLY! $45 on something that isn’t 4 months old. What about the 1 year manufacturer’s warranty? I am aware that I could have purchased an extended warranty from Wal-Mart, but most financial experts say they are unecessary upcharges designed to make more money for the stores. These experts say if you feel that you need the extended warranty, just put that money toward a better product. (I sure wish we did). That $130 could have gone towards a Sony that we will now buy. Based on the “durability” on a Magnavox product and the “great” customer service provided by Funai, I will avoid these products in the future. And I would advise others to do the same.

Best Blu-ray for the $$$!
I purchased this BD player from WalMart when it was $299.00. It was well worth the price! The load times really surprised me. I haven’t waited more then 30 seconds. Experience the superior picture quality of Blu-ray movies in full 1080p high-definition on your HDTV. DVDs will also look their best thanks to 1080p upconversion on compatible HDTVs that have an HDMI port. The NB500MG9 can play CDs and JPEG photos that have been burned onto CD-Rs, too. Additional highlights include component video output and a digital coaxial output for connecting compatible surround sound systems. You sure can’t go wrong for the $$$!

Highest quality Blu Ray picture of our three Blu Ray players
We have a Sylvania Blu Ray player which has an excellent picture and a Samsung model 1500 which has a very good picture. Our fairly new Magnavox Blu Ray player which we purchased at Walmart has an outstanding picture and plays old scratched DVD’s well even old 480 digital format DVD’s. The Magnavox is the top rated model at Consumer Reports currently although the Sylvania Blu Ray player used to be the top pic at Consumer Reports previously, but I think the Sylvania Blu Ray player model has been discontinued. There is no S video connection on the Magnavox, but with HDMI there is really no need for a S video connection

Poor Customer Service
I had this Blu Ray Player for about 4 months before it failed to play Blu Ray discs. I called support (actually Funai Corp.) and they setup a UPS pickup. That was about 6 weeks ago and my latest call to them revealed that they won’t be able to tell when they can replace it until after they have had it for 2 months. The Rep told me that this is their Rapid Exchange program.
Would not recommend purchasing.
