Blu-ray players generally aren't the hottest looking product in your home theater system. And this player is no exception. This player has boxy appearance. A small strip of gray runs along the perimeter and the rest of the face plate is black with a blue "Blu-ray" logo on the far left. Farther to the right is the disc tray and just right of center is the LCD screen which is large enough to read comfortably from a seating distance of about 5 feet. The right side contains the standard playback controls.

The included remote is also almost exactly the same as the prevoius model. The center of the remote is dominated by big blue playback buttons including chapter skip and fast-forward/rewind. It's fairly well laid out and easy to use and the clicker can also control a TV and AV receiver if programmed to do so.

This player is one of the first to support the Blu-ray profile 1.1. This means it has the 64kb onboard memory as well as the 256MB of local storage. This should allow the DMP-BD30 to play picture-in-picture commentary and perhaps take advantage of other interactive features available on Blu-ray Profile 1.1 discs. It is one of the first Blu-ray players that can output both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks in bitstream format to be decoded by compatible receivers. There is currently no Blu-ray or HD DVD player on the market able to decode DTS-HD Master Audio internally and only some Blu-ray players are capable of decoding Dolby TrueHD internally. The lack of internal decoding is particularly disappointing because the older model itself offered internal decoding for all of these formats except DTS-HS Master Audio.

Picture quality is top-notch on Blu-Ray movies AND does a great job on upconverting DVD titles. Audio bitstreamed to the Onkyo 606 sounds excellent in my setup. I have no complaints about this unit whatsoever. Well worth the price I paid.
