This player lacks the lacks the extremely annoying flip-down panel of its predecessor. While a large panel still conceals most of this player's front-panel controls the disc tray hides behind a separate smaller panel that automatically flips down when you hit the Open/Close button. On the right half of the face player is the LED display which was sized to be easily legible from a seating distance of about 7 feet.

The player's included remote control has a decent button layout although there are some missteps. The remote has a centrally located directional pad surrounded by useful buttons such as Back and Pop-up Menu. The separate rocker buttons for volume and channel control--for those who want to control their TV. The placement of the playback controls is subpar with fast-forward and rewind buttons located far away from central buttons.

This player can play standard-definition DVDs and CDs. It cannot play any discs of the competing HD DVD format. The player's high-resolution soundtrack support is excellent. It has onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution which means it can output these soundtracks either in PCM format over the HDMI output or via the analog outputs. If you have a newer receiver with onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding you can set this player to output audio over HDMI in encoded bitstream format--letting your receiver do the decoding. There should be absolutely no sound quality difference whether you let the receiver decode or the player decode but some AV fans just love seeing the "Dolby TrueHD" light on their new receiver.

If you play a regular dvd in this you will get upconversion (electronic conversion of the 480p video to 1080p video). This is my first Blu-Ray player and it couldn't have been an easier setup. Plugged it in and it was immediately ready for action. The Blu-Ray discs look fantastic as well as the upscaled DVD's. This is a great deal for any avid movie fan.
