Insignia NS-BRDVD blu ray player reviewed by George Williams
August 26, 2008
I purchased my Insignia NS-BRDVD from bestbuy.com. This is my very first BD player. I was waiting for the format war to end once it did I search the internet for the review of various Blu-ray players. I decided to research on various Blu-ray players in order to make the best possible buy for my needs. I needed relatively inexpensive player that would compliment my flat panel tv. This player was perfect in terms of price to performance ratio.
I did not need the latest BD profile player since I am not expecting to utilize the internet contents of through the player. This player is profile 1.1 compliant. 1.1 profile allows picture in picture feature. The 2.0 profile is kind of useless at this point and not worth the money. This player also lacks the multi channel audio outputs and high resolution audio decoding. If you can overlook these shortcomings, the rest of the player is perfectly capable blu-ray disc player for under $300. The 1080p 24 frame is pretty nice feature as well.
The player itself is not the most exciting looking design. But who really buys electronics based on the exterior looks? It's a basic box design with tray on the left and blu-ray logo on the right. There is small LCD display screen for general information display. The SD card reader is nice bonus if you plan to view digital pictures. The remote is nothing to gush over. It is pretty standard remote and it does its job adequately. The menu is pretty easy to navigate and straight forward.
The audio option is pretty basic. The player has capability to decode Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution. You will need receiver for other high definition audio decoding. But for me, this was perfectly fine for my needs. I have basic receiver home theater set up. If you are audiophile you most likely arent looking to buy relatively cheap blu-ray player.
We watched various blu-ray movies including Batman Begins and 300. Both looked fantastic on the flat screen tv. The audio was excellent as well. We also tried out various standard DVDs to compare the upconversion. The upconversion was excellent in terms of picture quality.
This player is perfect for budget minded consumer like myself. It does everything the more expensive players can do and much more. At sub $300 price point, you can't beat the performance or the value.

I bought one back in Febuary 2009 and recently we rented a movie and it wont play it we rented three times from two different places and none of them work. They said we need to up load new updates and now i see i cant. I think we all should get our money back for buying and cant fix our promblems.
FIRMWARE UPDATE PLEASE!!!
This player sucks. Apparently it is not upgradable so all future blu rays that will be coming out in 2.0 format will not work on them. So basically the machine is now useless. DO NOT BUY ONE!!!
I hope I don’t jinx myself, but I have not had one problem with this player since I bought it. I had originally bought a Magnavox during the day after Thanksgiving sale. It worked for about 5 movies…I think. So I took it back. I shopped around and initially turned my nose up at the Insignia. I talked to the salesperson and he told me that he bought one months previously and hasn’t had one problem. For the price, I figured what the heck. I told him to write his name on the receipt and if I had a problem I was coming to look for him
Lucky him, I have not had one problem. It loads fairly quickly (from what I hear some take a while) and the picture is great weather I play Blu-Ray or standard DVDs. My television is only a 720, but I like the picture. Crisp, clean, clear. I have my own little theater system so it sounds great too. I would imagine that with as many of these that were sold, and so far only 3 complaints, that’s not bad.
We purchased a Blu-Ray player in January 2009. We used the player once to watch a Blu-Ray movie and it worked fine. We went to use the player tonight and it would not play the movie we rented. I took it back to the rental place because we thought there was something wrong with the disc. The rental place replaced the movie and we had the same problem. So now we have a player and cannot watch movies that we rent! I thought that was the purposed of purchasing one! We should go back to the good “ole” days of VCR tapes. Put the tape in and push “Play”! We are very dissatisfied with this product!
When I first got this Blu-Ray player I was very pleased, Now I’m renting Blu-Ray movies that won’t load on my player. I’m told I need an upgrade on the firmware but there are no upgrades for this player. How long before the rental place quits refunding my money for movies that don’t play? Not happy at all!
I purchased the same bluray player from best buy on 1/11/09 and yesterday I had to return it to best buy. The player would not play Bluray or regular dvd’s and it also would make this very loud noise while it was loading. Best Buy said since it was past my 30 days, that they would send it back to Insignia for repair which could take up to 4 weeks! Great, I spend $300, use the player about 5 times and then it breaks down and I can’t even get a loaner???? First and last purchase, rather pay for a brand name that I know I can trust!
