Exclusive Review: Onkyo DV BD606 blu ray player
November 10, 2008

Onkyo has primarily made its mark in audio sector with its high performance receivers and players. Onkyo has made some quality DVD player as well as SACD players. Onkyo makes its blu ray player debut with the DV-BD606 blu ray player. On the paper, it delivers great plethora of features and audio options. One thing that might turn off some buyers is the lack of Profile 2.0 support.
The design of the player itself is more or less adequate. It adds nothing new but it is easy to look at. The disc tray is located on the left along with power button and ejection button. The lcd screen is located on the right side along with playback buttons and SD card reader as bonus. The lcd screen is little bit small for my taste. The remote control's layout is pretty good. I wish it had the tactile design for the button. Otherwise, it is fairly standard remote control. If you want more complete remote, you might consider the logitech Harmony line.
As mentioned earlier, this player lacks the Profile 2.0. This is kind of surprising seeing as this is a new player on the market. With Sony announcing BD live contents on all of their new Blu-ray movies, it might have been nice to include the profile 2.0.
The video quality of this player perfectly adequate. I've tried out the various Blu-ray discs and found no great jaggies or blockiness. The action sequences were delivered in crisp manner without any distortion. Ghost Rider played perfectly without a hitch. There is option to output the video at true 24 fps in 1080p mode which is pretty nice. The playback of regular DVDs were very good. Upscaling is not always perfect on some players. But, Onkyo has done a nice job on upconversion capability.
The audio output is pretty standard as well. It can decode most of the audio formats including True HD and DD. All of the high definition audio can be output in bitstream format for decoding on your receiver. If your looking into buying this player, you most likely have high end receiver. There are connections for standard component and HDMI. It does however, lack the S-video connections. Again, you most likely wont need S-video connection. The SD card reader is a big plus if you plan to use it to view photos or listen to MP3s.
Overall, this is a high end player for audiophiles and videophiles. This player will go perfectly with any high end set up with receivers. If you have the cash to burn this is one of the best players quality wise. I just hope that there will be a firmware upgrade for the Profile 2.0
