This led us to take a closer look at the plyaer to review it ourselves, giving you a chance to make a smart purchase as a consumer. Design

The design of the Sylvania NB530SLX is relatively slim and very attractive. You could easily fit this unit in any small space that is designed to hold a DVD player, VCR or similar playback device. The back of the unit is designed to efficiently make use of wiring without causing any problems. The opening for the blu ray drive is positioned on the right hand side and we thought making a note of this would be a good idea. The open/close, stop, play and pause buttons are conveniently located on the middle and left hand side of the units face, making for easy control of the most frequently used playback functions.

Remote Control

The remote control has the basic functions that most remote controls for blu-ray players come with, including all the most commonly used playback functions like open/close, stop, play and pause. You can also access the menu selections from the remote as well.

Performance

Imagine it, a stunning 24 frames per second of incredibly cinematic action that looks amazingly explosive and exciting. While affordable, this Blu-Ray DVD player is far from average.

Problems

This unit can be described as a great entry level player, but it's far from revolutionary. If you are looking for higher end players, the ones that cost upwards of 500 dollars, this is not the player for you. Being able to bring competitive display features in such a basic package is commendable but this unit lacks the intensity of its more expensive counterparts.

There is also the necessity of updating the firmware from time to time. If you are not into updating your device in order to save some money, then again, this player is not for you. But for those of you who are willing to undergo the updates, this player is priced so incredibly low that it makes the process well worth it.

New Blu-ray player Sylvania NB-501SL9 reviewed by Michail Yu

November 20, 2008

I purchased a Sylvania NB-501SL9, and PS3. In the 2 week that I've had this player, it's done a terrific job on video and audio quality. I'm playing it on a 49" Panasonic connected through HDMI. I've never had any of the stutters or other audio/video glitches that others have mentioned. I've never had any of the stutters or other audio/video glitches that others have mentioned. The BR players are all updatable so it's possible to play the latest movies. However, this player has a VERY unintuitive failure mode and upgrade procedure. But once you get that 1080p flat screen there's just no other way to watch video. Even with the problem it is worth getting this player for 1080p picures.

I was able to play many DVD that I had already and it does project it very nicely on my new flat screen tv. Very clear picture and very nice sound. Blu-Ray movie displays crystal clear. For those who wonder if it will play homemade Blu-Ray DVDs I can report that I have sucessfully created a Blu-Ray DVD with menus on a 25G Single Layer BD-RE (Rewritable) disk using the LG GGW-H20L burner. One drawback that keeps this unit from being perfect is no ethernet connectability for firmware upgrading. It is my opinion that this player was released prematurely based on its feature set. This player did a great job on the Bluray compatibility & picture quality and the DVD upconversion quality. This player is good as far as disks that work on it but it does not support 48kHz/24-bit HD true sound that other blu-ray disks come with. The sound will pop out of sync with the visual. Before you buy call the manufacturer and ask if they have solved this problem by issuing a firmware (disk to put in the machine to update the harddrive) or not.

Upconversion on this player is mediocre, which is very important if you have big library of DVDs. I figured instead of spending $100 or so on upconvert DVD player to work with my new TV, I decided to go directly to Blu-Ray, since the Blu-Ray is now standard of HD DVDs. The Upconversion of standard definition DVDs is defnitely a strong point for this player. Overall, I found this player to be competent Blu-ray player and a great upconverting DVD player.

New Blu-ray player Sylvania NB-501SL9 reviewed by Steve Dochtermann

October 30, 2008

I purchased a Sylvania NB-501SL9, and PS3. In the 3 weeks that I've had this player, it's done a marvelous job on video and audio quality. I'm playing it on a 49" Sony connected through HDMI. I've never had any of the stutters or other audio/video glitches that others have mentioned. This player takes by far the longest of my three players to load movies and simply responding to an eject/open request takes 30 seconds for some reason. The BR players are all updatable so it's possible to play the latest movies. However, this player has a VERY hard to understand failure mode and upgrade procedure. But once you get that 1080p flat screen there's just no other way to watch video. Even with the problem it is worth getting this player for 1080p picures.

I have only had significant problems with one disk that I own and that was "Lord of War". It played the first 3/4 of the movie just fine and then started freezing up every 1-2 minutes making the movie unwatchable. For those who wonder if it will play homemade Blu-Ray DVDs I can report that I have sucessfully created a Blu-Ray DVD with menus on a 25G Single Layer BD-RE (Rewritable) disk using the LG GGW-H20L burner.
