Samsung BD-P4600 Blu-Ray Player Review
August 13, 2009

Samsung generated a lot of buzz when they previewed the BD-P4600 at the 2009 CES. Not only did it have great number of features, it also had a very unique design not seen on previous Blu-ray players. Following the Touch of Color design schemes on other electronics, The BD-P4600 boasts glossy finish and red colors bleeding from the rounded edges. It might be aesthetically pleasing but serves no practical purpose when it comes to the actual playback. Another big feature of BD-P4600 is the ability to mount the player on the wall instead of shelving it in your entertainment center.
Loaded with Features and Options
Functionally, the BD-P4600 is identical to the BD-P3600. It boasts same features and playback capability. The BD-P4600 is a Profile 2.0 player that comes with on-board 1GB memory as well as the WiFi dongle. Because of the design, Samsung has chosen to remove the 7.1 channel analog output. Otherwise, it has the same audio decoding capability. It can decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and DTS-HD Master Audio Essential. The ability to stream Netflix and Pandora is carried over from BD-P3600 and BD-P1600. Another welcome carry over is the ability to stream media files from your computer. Also, the included Wi-Fi dongle is extra $80 if bought separately.
Design

If you are seriously considering the BD-P4600 for extra $50, you are most likely attracted to the design or the option to mount it on the wall. No other player offers an out of the box mounting solution. Whether it’s worth extra $50 is questionable. Having said that, Samsung BD-P4600 is a beautiful looking player. The rounded edges accentuated by Touch of Color scheme makes it a very aesthetically pleasing player to look at. At about 8 x 18 inches, the player is definitely on the smaller side. And, the overall thickness of the player is just 1.7 inches. This makes it one of the smallest Blu-ray disc players on the market. The entire player lacks any hard buttons to speak of. Instead, the player features flush buttons that light up when the player is powered up. Otherwise, the LCD and the buttons are “hidden” and out of the way when powered down. Due to the design, the player lacks the traditional loading tray for the disc. Instead, Samsung has implemented slot loading system on the side of the player. The bottom of the player houses the connectivity ports. These include the HDMI, RJ-45, video and audio out, digital audio out, USB, and power input. All these ports are housed in a compartment with a flip down door. Also, you can close the door even with all the connections.
Remote Control

The included remote control doesn’t deviate from BD-P1600 and BD-P3600. The numeric buttons are located at the top of the remote with playback functions right below it. The channel and volume buttons are located in the middle of the remote control. The directional and BD-J disc buttons are placed at the bottom of the remote. The BD-J buttons are color coded in red, green, yellow, and blue and are used for special features. The dedicated subtitle and audio buttons are nice additions for on the fly switching. Overall, the redesigned remote control is a step above the previous generation remote controls. Most of the advanced home theater users will want to purchase a programmable remote like Harmony remote controls from Logitech.
Performance
Aside from form factor, the BD-P4600 mirrors the performance of BD-P3600. That is to say, it is almost identical to BD-P3600. There were no discernible differences between the video processing qualities. The three identical movies tested on the BD-P3600 were also used to test the BD-P4600. As with BD-P3600, the movies showed no moiré or jaggies. The fast action sequences produced no blurring or blocking artifacts. As with BD-P1600 and BD-P3600, the loading time was very fast. The loading time of the new Samsung players are by far the best. The loading times are quite noticeable when tested against other Blu-ray players from Panasonic or Sony players. The streaming quality of Netflix and Pandora are on par with watching or listening on the computer. You need high speed internet to get the best possible quality for the Netflix streams.
Audio and Sound

The audio performance is identical to that of BD-P3600 as well. The player is capable of decoding Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Essentials out of the box. Due to the design constraints, the BD-P4600 lacks the 7.1 channel analog output support. The BD-P3600 is the only new Samsung player capable of 7.1 channel analog output. If you are considering the BD-P4600, make sure you have receiver capable of HDMI input and output. Other than that, the quality of Pandora streaming was very capable.
Network Capability and Issues
As with BD-P3600, the BD-P4600 is capable of streaming media files from your PC. This is a big addition to the Blu-ray player for people that have large media collection on their PC. However, the setup is not very user friendly. You need some working knowledge in networking process to get it up and running. The automatic detection and setting feature is useless as it failed to detect the PC on the network. As with BD-P3600, you need to manually input IP and log in address every time you connect to the network PC. I’m confident Samsung will refine this through firmware updates.
Other Thoughts
I did not utilize the mounting kit that was included with the player. If you choose not to mount the player on the wall, you can use the stand that comes with the player. The player sits on the stand on a slanted angle giving it a unique look. The biggest problem I see with mounting it on the wall is the wire management to make it look presentable. Until we get truly wireless player, you will have to punch some holes in your wall if you want the wires to stay out of sight.
The street price of this player is roughly $400. This is about $50 more than the BD-P3600 model. Both players have exact same functionally and components except for the lack of 7.1 channel analog output on the BD-P4600. If you are willing to part with $50 for unique design, BD-P4600 will not disappoint.

Samsung BD-P3600 Review
June 13, 2009

Most of the major electronics manufacturers boast various models of Blu-ray disc players. They range from entry level models to higher end models that command premium price. The Samsung BD-P3600 was one of the higher end models announced at previous CES. The Samsung BD-P1600 and BD-P4600 are already available for purchase. While BD-P4600 may carry higher model number and slightly higher price, the BD-P3600 is aimed at the broader market for the higher end Blu-ray disc players. While BD-P4600 is a radically departure from the BD-P1600, the BD-P3600 is more traditional upgrade from the BD-P1600. The BD-P3600 retains the traditional design and adds various features absent from the BD-P1600.
Features
The Samsung BD-P3600 is definitely a step up from the BD-P1600. While it shares the core features like Profile 2.0 and various audio decoding options, the BD-P3600 adds various features absent on the BD-P1600 model. On the audio side, the BD-P3600 comes with 7.1 analog out put on top of all the audio decoding options found on BD-P1600. The biggest addition is the inclusion of the Wi-Fi adapter, extra $80 if you purchase them separately. This will be a big bonus for people with wireless network. Also, the player comes with 1GB storage space. This should eliminate the need for additional USB drives. Another great feature is the ability to stream media files from your computer. All these features are in addition to the features found on BD-P1600 such as the Netflix and Pandora streaming.
Design

I give Samsung a lot of credit for the BD-P3600’s design. They could have stuffed more features into the BD-P1600’s frame. Instead, they made it stand out on its own. The overall glossy finish of BD-P1600 is replicated on the BD-P3600. The dimension is not merely a rectangular unit like its predecessor or other Blu-ray players. The top of the player is wider and it tapers off toward the bottom. This gives the player a unique look compared to other players. Another difference was the addition of the touch sensitive buttons at the top of the player instead of front. This might be a problem if you intend to place your Blu-ray player in a tight space where you can’t readily reach the buttons at the top of the player. There is a flip down cover that houses one of the two USB ports on the right side of the player. The tray is located on the left side of the player. The back of the player houses rest of the connectivity. These include HDMI, component, audio outputs, RJ-45, USB, and 7.1 channel analog out put.
Remote Control

The remote is similar to the one found on BD-P1600. The numeric buttons are located at the top half of the remote control along with the power button. The playback function buttons are placed directly beneath the numeric buttons. The middle of the player contains the channel and the volume buttons. The bottom half of the remote control houses the directional buttons, the color coded special buttons, and Menu buttons. The dedicated subtitle and audio buttons are a welcome addition from the older generation Samsung players. If you have several Samsung home theater equipments, you can utilize the Anynet+ feature to control them all with single remote. You must own Anynet+ compatible equipments to utilize this feature.
Video Quality and Performance

From the start, Samsung’s Blu-ray players have never had any problem with video/image quality. The BD-P1500 and BD-P2500 models were all excellent Blu-ray players. The lower end model BD-P1600 was also an excellent performer. The BD-P3600 continues the excellent video quality. The same three Blu-ray movies were tested to get consistent comparison between the players. The Batman Begins and Matrix discs showed no discernable moiré or jaggie defects. The action sequences showed no blurring or blocking artifacts. This was consistent throughout the movie. The video quality was on par with the BD-P1600 model. The third movie, Marley and Me, also had no problem in any area. As noted in the BD-P1600review, the loading time and overall performance time has vastly improved over the first generation players. The BD-P3600 is even faster than the BD-P1600 model. It comes close to the performance of PlayStation 3 loading times. On some cases, the loading time of BD-P3600 was close to 10 seconds or faster than the other players. One other thing to note is the quality of Pandora and Netflix streams. As these are mostly standard definition videos and audios, you can get varied qualities with the speed of your internet connection. For best result, broadband speed is recommended.
Audio
The overall audio quality is pretty much similar to other Blu-ray disc players. The onboard decoding support for the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA is a very nice addition from the previous generation players. One addition from the BD-P1600 model is the inclusion of analog 7.1 channel output support. For people with older receivers that need 7.1 channel input, this should be a nice inclusion. The overall performance of audio was excellent. It had no problem with any of the movies on the audio side. Even the streamed audio from Pandora had excellent audio quality.
Conclusion
The ability to stream media files from your PC to Samsung BD-P3600 is one of the biggest additions from previous and current Blu-ray disc players. Once you set up the network configuration, you will be able to stream MP3, Divx, and various picture formats from your PC. Reading other reviews, people with very basic networking knowledge might have some difficulties in setting this up. The automatic detection and setting feature were virtually useless as it did not detect the PC on the network. You have to manually enter the IP address as well as the log in information every time you want to connect to the streaming PC. I hope Samsung will release an update to make this feature more easily accessible.
At about $400.00 this is not the cheapest player on the market. However, for price and performance that is comparable to Playstation 3, it is a very good choice for people who do not need a gaming machine to go along with their Blu-ray players.

Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-Ray Player Review
March 21, 2009

Samsung introduced number of new Blu-ray players at 2009 CES. They range from entry level models to high end model BD-P3600 and BD-P4600. The high end models received much of the attention for its design and form factor as well as the WiFi capability. Getting lost in the mix was the Samsung BD-P1600, the entry level Blu-ray player for Samsung. Companies like Samsung usually count on entry level/mainstream models for majority of their sales. So, it is important for Samsung to produce a great successor to the BD-P1500 and BD-P2500, both great players. Now, the BD-P1600 is available at most retailers for $299.99. The BD-P1600 packs a lot of features for a sub $300 Blu-ray disc player.
Features
For an entry level model, the BD-P1600 includes many of the features usually found on high end models. This is good news for Blu-ray as it moves into mainstream from early adapters. More and more features found only on high end expensive models are finding their way into the lower priced models like BD-P1600. BD-P1600 is Profile 2.0 player with full support for BD-Live. The most notable additions to the BD-P1600 are the high definition audio decoding and content streaming capabilities. On the audio side, BD-P1600 is capable of decoding Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby digital Plus, DTS HD, and Dolby True HD. The content streaming consists of Netflix and Pandora streaming. With Netflixsubscription, you can stream over 12,000 titles straight to your Blu-ray player. With the Pandora service, you can stream latest music straight to your television.
Design

The BD-P1600 is really a slick looking player. The player sports a glossy front panel that covers the disc tray on the left and playback function buttons on the right. The LCD screen in between the two. The player itself about 17 x 8 x 2 inches. The back panel contains all the connectivity. The connectivity includes USB, HDMI, composite and component video, S-video, optical digital audio, and Ethernet port. The player does lack 5.1 or 7.1 analog output connectivity.
Remote Control

The 47 button remote control is fairly standard remote control. The dedicated subtitle and audio buttons are pretty useful. If you like to watch foreign movies with subtitles, the dedicated button is nice addition. The audio button gives you direct access to the audio menu on the fly. The numeric buttons are at the top with playback function buttons right beneath it. The channel and volume buttons are in the middle of the remote, which is better than placing it at the top or bottom. The directional and BD-J disc buttons are placed at the bottom. The BD-J buttons consists of red, green, yellow, and blue. These buttons are used for special features on some discs. Overall, the dedicated buttons are quite nice for convenience. You can program the remote to work with various other components. However, it is not as extensive as the after-market universal remote controls.
Picture Quality
The predecessor models, BD-P1500 and BD-P2500 variants, had no discernible defects in video processing. The BD-P1500 did have some specific defects in some pattern testing but these did not translate to defects in real world movie playbacks. Overall, Samsung models have great video processing. The BD-P1600 is no exception. To compare the video and image quality between other players, Batman Begins and Matrix Blu-ray movies were played. There were no noticeable jaggies or moirés during the playback. The action sequence showed no traces of blocking or other artifacts. The real improvement over the previous models is the loading time. The average loading time was between 8 and 14 seconds compared to almost double for the older models. This held true for newer Blu-ray movies with fancier menus and BD-Live contents as well as the extras. The video quality of Netflix streamed movies are DVD quality at best. The quality depends on your internet connection. For good quality, you will need broadband connection that can handle high bandwidth.
Audio

The audio quality is on par with previous models. The onboard decoding support for the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA is nice addition for people looking for out of the box decoding of these formats. The lack of analog 5.1 or 7.1 channel support out of the box might be problem for people that need those set ups. Otherwise, the audio options are excellent. The Pandora is a nice added bonus. The streaming internet radio is pretty nice if you want to listen to certain song on a spur of the moment. The audio quality of Pandora is pretty good compared to regular CD playback. If you have high end audio system, you might notice some degradation.
Overall, this is one of the best Blu-ray disc player for any price range short of buying PS3 or something lot more expensive like Pioneer or Marantz. At $300.00, it is feature packed player. If you want standalone unit, this should satisfy most users.

Reviews
This blu-ray player has performed flawlessly so far. I love the netflix streaming as well. So far, so good...no lockups for me and I have the latests firmware.
This is a great blu-ray player. The one I got came with the latest firmware so no need to worry about updating it and the bugs associated with firmware updates. This system is a slight bit high tech and you need to know how to navigate the system settings to use it properly. If you plan on connecting this to a network you need to know what you are doing or your going to have issues. It comes set to display at 1080i so make sure to change it to 1080p. It upconverts standard DVD's very well and plays them almost to the quality of a blu-ray. Load times are faster then most units. Great player for techies and tweakers who are good at troubleshooting any possible issues(I haven't had any problems but apparently others have).
I read the reviews on Amazon after I bought this player and saw all the issues people were having with the firmware upgrade. I was debating whether I should return it or give it a try. I tried it out and it works perfectly. The AnyNet feature works with the Samsung TV and automatically switches the TV over to the Blu-ray player when you power on or perform a function on the player. It is extremely easy to use. If there is no disc inside, it automatically brings up a menu of online services (Netflix, Blockbuster, Pandora, YouTube). Press a button and you're automatically connected to the online service. If there is a disc inside, the disc will automatically play. One of the reviews had a complaint abt the noise. It is a little loud when initially loading the disc, but is quiet when playing the disc.
The control is lousy, nothing worst than having to point straight to the device and press the keys hard so that it responds. It won't read some BR discs, so you have to clean them. Sometimes the streaming stops working, and you have to reset the router and modem even though the computers have Internet. It doesn't remember where the movie was last playing, which my dvd player does that. However, it does the job and it's awesome to stream movies and pandora radio. 3.5-star product IMO.
I just finished reading a few of the recent reviews posted for this device. It made wonder if I was using the same product. I must say that failure to read product specifications or lack of knowledge in regard to home networking (routers, firewalls, ect.) is not a product failure. I purchased my BD last Dec along with a Samsung HDTV and it works perfectly fine. First, it was connected only to my Samsung HDTV and it provided excellent veiwing results for both Blue-ray and reg DVD (I retired my DVD player because it improved the playback quality of DVDs). This past month I added an internet connection to take advantage of Pandora, Netflix, and YouTube. I simply followed instructions provided in the user manual. It is true that Samsung requires it's proprietary wireless adapter (a pain but clearly noted in product literature). I instead chose to use a wired ethernet connection 1) to eliminate the need to purchase adapters for my other entertainment equipment and 2) ethernet provides better video streaming. The device is attached to a router and connected to the internet flawlessly. None is this is plug-n-play and home networks can be down-right complicated. Buyers should be willing to read insrtructions or hire someone to complete setups. There is also a note on the problematic firmware updates. The solution is, remove disc from unit before doing an update. Simple enough but Samsung should have made this more clear earlier. As for the auto starting comment, this is a feature of samsung products. If you turn on the BD player, the TV will automatically switch to that source (expecting you to play a DVD or connect to internet for other media). This can be annoying if you inadvertantly turn the BD on. All in all, this is a very adeaquate BD player, especially given its price. The quality of picture, and sound from Pandora is great. This is all just my opinion from personal experiences since I often use these reviews before making product purchases. Good luck.

Samsung BD-P2500 Review – First Impression
November 29, 2008
As the manufacturer to first release a Blu-ray disc player, Samsung has enjoyed the status as one of premier manufacturers when it comes to Blu-ray disc player. Most of us don't need introduction to Samsung as they make great consumer electronics. The korean company has come very far in reaching and perhaps surpassing Sony as the most recognized consumer electronic brand. As such, we come to expect solid, if not great players from Samsung. Their previous main consumer player, BD-P1500, has been pretty popular player with solid performance at a great price. This player builds on the success with added features such as Profile 2.0, ethernet and USB connectivity, and added audio supports.
The player looks pretty identical to the BD-P1500. You have the tray on the left side of the player. The LCD display is positioned in the middle with basic playback function buttons on the right side. The glossy finish welcome change from the BD-P1500's finish. Other than that, it is pretty similar player with different connectivity. The player comes with ethernet and USB connectivity. This is handy for updating firmware as well as enjoying the BD-LIVE feature on the new blu-ray movies. One thing that is missing is the SD card reader. The SD card reader would have been nice little addition as most consumers have digital cameras.
The video quality is just amazing on this player. All the blu-ray discs played without any flaws. No jaggieness, motion blur, or choppy sequences were detected in any of the blu-ray movies I played. I played the entire Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy on the player and detected no artifacts. If there is any defects, I doubt anybody can notice it without trying. The audio options are great. It has your standard analog 7.1 channel audio ports should you not have a receiver. It can natively decode DTS-HD, Dolby digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD. Rest of the high definition audio formats can be bitstreamed to your receiver for decoding. If don't have receiver for your audios, this player might be pretty good choice.
Overall, this is solid successor to the BD-P1500 player from Samsung. At this time, this player can be pruchased at less than $400.00 in various retail outlets as well as internet. There are no visible flaws with this player in terms of video or audio quality as well as solid construction. Highly recommended!

Jonathan Rolland from Flippin has sent in review of Samsung BD-UP5000 Blu-ray player.
November 21, 2008
Blu-ray players generally aren't the hottest looking product in your home theater system. And this player is no exception. This player has boxy appearance. A small strip of gray runs along the perimeter and the rest of the face plate is black with a blue "Blu-ray" logo on the far left. Farther to the right is the disc tray and just right of center is the LCD screen which is large enough to read comfortably from a seating distance of about 5 feet. The right side contains the standard playback controls.
The included remote is also almost exactly the same as the prevoius model. The center of the remote is dominated by big blue playback buttons including chapter skip and fast-forward/rewind. It's fairly well laid out and easy to use and the clicker can also control a TV and AV receiver if programmed to do so.
This player is one of the first to support the Blu-ray profile 1.1. This means it has the 64kb onboard memory as well as the 256MB of local storage. This should allow the DMP-BD30 to play picture-in-picture commentary and perhaps take advantage of other interactive features available on Blu-ray Profile 1.1 discs. It is one of the first Blu-ray players that can output both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks in bitstream format to be decoded by compatible receivers. There is currently no Blu-ray or HD DVD player on the market able to decode DTS-HD Master Audio internally and only some Blu-ray players are capable of decoding Dolby TrueHD internally. The lack of internal decoding is particularly disappointing because the older model itself offered internal decoding for all of these formats except DTS-HS Master Audio.
Picture quality is top-notch on Blu-Ray movies AND does a great job on upconverting DVD titles. Audio bitstreamed to the Onkyo 606 sounds excellent in my setup. I have no complaints about this unit whatsoever. Well worth the price I paid.

Newly released Blu-ray player Samsung BD-P1500 review sent in by James DeWine from Pittsburgh.
November 17, 2008
I purchased this player with the1.2 firmware and it was great. Yes, it did take a very long time to load Pirates of the Carribean - almost 3 full minutes. That is due to the disc predominantly using Java (BD-J) for interactivity. Few days ago I flash updated the firmware to 2.60 in about 17 minutes. See manufacturer's web site for the firmware and carefully follow the instructions. They will even provide you with the disc.
I purchased a 46" HDTV and a Toshiba HD-A20 1080p HD DVD Player player along with this Blu-ray Disc Player. I wanted to see the results of both Blu-Ray and HD DVD before investing in more expensive units. Setting up was quick and straightforward - no problems here. I noticed that this Sony player weighs much less than the Toshiba HD-A20 HD DVD player. There needs to be a ethernet port or some other way to access updates online direct to this player, a wireless method possibly? My Toshiba HD DVD player has the CAT-5 ethernet port and it makes updating (not exactly simple) more flexible. Manufacture's website offers the image (ISO) burn to DVDR method for updating, but this seems counter productive at best. One other thing I immediately noticed is how whisper quiet this player is. There is no noticeable fan noise whatsoever. Compare this to the Toshiba HD-XA2 fan, which has a sound resembling the whine of a tiny fighter jet.
The remote is as usual with other electronic devices. It is extremely clutered. It takes about 30 seconds or so once a disc is inserted for the movie to begin its menuing/playing sequences. The unit loads the movie info into memory during that time I believe. Some movie discs aren't produced to support the Resume functionality where you can watch a movie. There is high fan noise during dvd playback, which was only audible with the tv turned off. While the movie is playing, I couldn't hear the fan at all. The display on the front is a gray-blue. There are 4 brightness settings (High-Med-Low-Off), which can be accessed with one button on the top top of the remote. Very nice. With the display turned off, this is a very nice viewing experience. There is also an additional display button on the remote, which tells you the TRT of the disc, which chapter you are watching, time remaining in the chapter, and bit rate.
