Philips BDP5012 Blu Ray Player Review

While not as popular as some other manufacturers, Philips has consistently built quality disc players. The Philips licensed its brand name to Funai for manufacture and distribution of electronics in the North America. There was some confusion as to who would actually make and distribute the 2009 Blu ray disc players. The 2009 models were true Philips developed products. Included in the 2009 models were three different Blu ray disc player models. The BDP 3010 was the Profile 1.1 model while BDP 5010 and BDP 7310 was Profile 2.0 model. With all the future Philips product being produced by Funai, the 2009 model might be the last time we see a true Philips product in North America.

Features

Released back in May of 2009, the Philips BDP 5012 is just a minor update to the well received BDP 5010 model. Philips BDP 5012 is a Profile 2.0 player capable of playing BD-LIVE content. While it lacks internet streaming content or media streaming capabilities, it does come with all the onboard decoding of high definition audio formats. DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD can be natively decoded on the player. Also, unlike most entry level players, the BDP 5012 comes with 5.1 channel analog audio output. The main difference between BDP-5012 and BDP-5010 seems to be the lack of Divx HD decoding on BDP 5012 and the inclusion of WMA support. Other than that, the features of BDP 5012 are identical to BDP 5010 model. BDP 5012 is also compatible with EasyLink control from Philips. You can control all EasyLink products with a single remote control.

Design

The dimension and weight of BDP 5012 are identical to the BDP 5010. The disc tray is located on the left side of the glossy face plate. Simple playback buttons and small LCD is located on the right side. The player does have low profile design and looks more compact than some of the other Blu ray disc players. The back of the player includes the Analog audio out, HDMI, Analog 5.1 channel out, component video out, digital coaxial out, and Ethernet. The SD card slot located right below the playback function buttons on the front. The included remote control is adequate for basic functions. The button lay out is pretty good. The channel and volume buttons are located in the middle with numeric buttons at the bottom. This is preferable to having the channel and volume buttons located at the bottom. You should invest in a simple macro capable remote control instead of using a stock remote control.

Video and Performance

The BDP 5012 is very quick booting and loading player. The BDP 5012 was as fast as the latest generation disc players on loading and booting time. That is quite impressive as booting and loading time has been very slow on the last generation Blu ray players. The overall video quality was excellent. Both Blu ray movies tested showed no video defects. The playback showed no moiré, jaggieness, or motion blur throughout the movie. The pictures were crisp and sharp. Overall video processing of Blu ray discs were flawless. Surprisingly, the DVD upscaling was quite good compared to other players. While not as good as Oppo, DVD upscaling showed sharpness and overall good scaling from standard definition to high definition.

Audio

The inclusion of WMA support was nice addition. But, the inclusion of MP3 format would have been nicer. The overall audio quality was on par with other players. The inclusion of 5.1 channel analog was nice touch for people without HDMI compliant receivers. The BDP-5012 handled all the audio formats as advertised. The CD and WMA played off SD card had no problem playing on the BDP-5012. Overall, I had no complaints on audio performance.

Overall Opinion

The licensing agreement with Funai seems to come at an odd time for Philips. Philips has enjoyed great brand recognition in North America. They have consistently delivered great home theater product. The cut throat market has made Philips pull out of North American market for foreseeable future. The performance of BDP 5012 reaffirms the quality product Philips can produce. The 2010 model will be manufactured by Funai and we’ll see if they can replicate the overall performance provided by the BDP-5012. Overall, the BDP 5012 is an excellent entry level player priced under $150 at most retailers.

Blu Ray Review: Philips BDP7200

The BDP7200 is Philips first consumer Blu-ray disc player. It was released back in May of 2008 and thus lacks the latest features that are present in the latest model offerings from Sony, Samsung, or Panasonic. With inital launch price of $350.00 it might have been attractive for those not wishing to place PS3 at the center of the entertainment hub. As of this review, the price hovers around $250.00 which is pretty nice price point for any Blu-ray disc player.

The aesthetic of this player stands out from other player. It has glossy front with disc tray on the left with LCD in the middle and the basic playback function on the far right. The corners are smoothed out which makes it stand out from other traditional looking players. The included remote is adequate and fairly easy to operate. You might opt for better universal remote if you have more than few appliances to operate. This model only supports the Profile 1.1. And, the lack of ethernet port means harder time updating firmware for future Profile update. This might be turn off if you are looking for BD-LIVE contents present on many new blu-ray movies. The legacy support for 5.1 analog channel audio is nice inclusion if you lack receiver. There is the standard HDMI and component video output present as well as 2 channel audio and coaxial outputs.

There have been reviews reporting some poor image quality with this player. However, I personally didn't experience poor video quality. I noticed on few artifacts playing Batman Begins. I'm not sure if it's the disc or the player. Other than that, everything was pretty much on par with other players. The playback of divx format is nice littel bonus. I'm not sure why it's necessary on Blu-ray player but inclusion might be useful for those that do their own encoding. The colors seemed to spot on and vibrant. The major problem I had with this player was the load time. It takes way too long compared to other players. Especially compared to the fast Sharp Aquos player. Not sure if this can be fixed with firmware update or not. Being an early model, this player has no support for onboard decoding of high definition audio. This means no decoding of Dolby TRueHD and DTS-HD Master audio. This might not be a problem if you have latest receiver because these can be bitstreamed to your receiver. Otherwise, the lack of option might be problem for people with legacy receivers.

Overall, its really not a bad player at $250.00. But, prices of other more competent players are coming down to this level as well. If you can put up with lack of audio option and slow loading time, this might not be a bad player. However, I can recommend at least 5 other players that are better at loading time with more audio options.

Newly released Blu-ray player Philips BDP9000 review sent in by Jonathan Gent from Toronto.

I obtained this player with the1.7 firmware and it was great. Yes, it did take a very long time to load Independence Day - almost 3 full minutes. That is due to the disc heavily using Java (BD-J) for interactivity. Few days ago I flash updated the firmware to 2.60 in about 11 minutes. See manufacturer's web site for the firmware and carefully follow the instructions. They will even provide you with the disc.
I purchased a 46" HDTV and a Toshiba HD-A20 1080p HD DVD Player player along with this Blu-ray Disc Player. I wanted to see the results of both Blu-Ray and HD DVD before investing in more expensive units. Setting up was quick and straightforward - no problems here. I noticed that this Sony player weighs much less than the Toshiba HD-A20 HD DVD player. There needs to be a ethernet port or some other way to access updates online direct to this player, a wireless method possibly? My Toshiba HD DVD player has the CAT-5 ethernet port and it makes updating (not exactly simple) more flexible. Manufacture's website offers the image (ISO) burn to DVDR method for updating, but this seems not convenient at best. One other thing I immediately noticed is how whisper quiet this player is. There is no noticeable fan noise whatsoever. Compare this to the Toshiba HD-XA2 fan, which has a sound resembling the whine of a tiny fighter jet.

Remote is reasonably good. No more fumbling around for 2 different remotes. The one area where this remote disappoints is that unlike the black aluminum Toshiba remote the buttons are not backlit. The problem with this player is that it does not output Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA in any way shape or form. There is hard to hear fan noise during dvd playback, which was only noticeable with the tv turned off. While the movie is playing, I couldn't hear the fan at all. The display on the front is a gray-blue. There are 4 brightness settings (High-Med-Low-Off), which can be accessed with one button on the top top of the remote. Very nice. With the display turned off, this is a very nice viewing experience. There is also an additional display button on the remote, which tells you the TRT of the disc, which chapter you are watching, time remaining in the chapter, and bit rate.

Philips BDP9000 reviewed by George Hakansson

I obtained my Philips BDP9000 from Amazon.com. This is my second BD player. I was waiting for the format war to end once it did I read a review Cnet.com on the internet that said you might consider waiting to making the jump to BD until the next generation of players to come out on the market.

The disc loads pretty fast From what I heard it is much faster then last models. I was upgrading coming from a Phillips 5 disc up converting DVD player and that thing was slow so I'm very satisfied. The video isgood and the audio is great too. I don't even have it connected to a amp that does Dolby Tru-HD or DTS-MA. That will be my next purchase.

There is only one thing that I'm not pleased with the player has the Pioneer Theater Sync feature. Which works great with my Samsung amp. But for some reason the DVD remote will only control the volume for the TV not the amp. So I still have to use a second remote for volume on my Sony amp. This makes no sense to me.

We watched Dark City, Batman Begins, 300, and Batman Begins on BD so far. Batman Begins wasawesome from an audio and picture quality issue. My wife said she had no clue that a DVD could look that good.

I also watched I Am Legend on a SD DVD and that look pretty good too.

The DVD player has a slot in the back for a USB drive and it also has a ethernet port so it can connect to the net for firmware updates and to access bonus features.

The next generation model due out in the fall it will cost more but it decodes all the audio inside the player.

Overall seven day in I'm satisfied with the purchase and I'm happy I waited for this model.

New Blu-ray player Philips BDP7200 reviewed by JING WEN Xiao Ting

I possess a Philips BDP7200, and PS3. In the 15 days that I've had this player, it's done a good job on video and audio quality. I'm playing it on a 46" Sony connected through HDMI. I've never had any of the stutters or other audio/video glitches that others have mentioned. I've never had any of the stutters or other audio/video glitches that others have mentioned. The BR players are all updatable so it's possible to play the latest movies. However, this player has a VERY unintuitive failure mode and upgrade procedure. But once you get that 1080p flat screen there's just no other way to watch video. Even with the problem it is worth getting this player for 1080p picures.

I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY DISC PLAY OR CONNECTION ISSUES AS HAVE BEEN REPORTED BY OTHER USERS. MY ONLY ADVICE ON THIS IS TO KEEP THE FIRMWARE UPDATED EITHER BY LAN OR BY CALLING SAMSUNG AND REQUESTING A FIRMWARE DISC. For those who wonder if it will play homemade Blu-Ray DVDs I can report that I have sucessfully created a Blu-Ray DVD with menus on a 25G Single Layer BD-RE (Rewritable) disk using the LG GGW-H20L burner. One drawback that keeps this unit from being perfect is no ethernet connectability for firmware upgrading. It is my opinion that this player was released prematurely based on its feature set. This player did a great job on the Bluray compatibility & picture quality and the DVD upconversion quality. This player is good as far as disks that work on it but it does not support 48kHz/24-bit HD true sound that other blu-ray disks come with. The sound will pop out of sync with the visual. Before you buy call the manufacturer and ask if they have solved this problem by issuing a firmware (disk to put in the machine to update the harddrive) or not.

Upconversion on this player is pretty good, which is very important if you have vast library of DVDs. I figured instead of spending $100 or so on upconvert DVD player to work with my new TV, I decided to go directly to Blu-Ray, since the Blu-Ray is now standard of HD DVDs. The Upconversion of standard definition DVDs is defnitely a strong point for this player. Overall, I found this player to be competent Blu-ray player and a great upconverting DVD player.
